The GRIP process not only assists our client with decision-making at the concept stage, but ensures appropriate levels of checking and analysing delivery performance at completion in order to verify that the benefits sought are actually achieved.

The GRIP Process can be seen below, for which Fenix provides all services;


GRIP Stage 1 – Output definition

At the start of the GRIP process we resolve the following questions and issues to enable us to reach a successful solution:

  • What is required?
  • How much will it cost?
  • Funding?
  • Priority?
  • Is it safe?
  • Time constraints?

GRIP Stage 2 – Feasibility

Fenix will identify any constraints in the projects so they can be resolved at a later stage. This is best done as early as possible to save potential major disruption. We will identify:

  • How much work will be required?
  • Will it affect the environment?
  • Is the outcome worth the cost?
  • Can it be delivered economically?
  • Is it something that can be done?

GRIP Stage 3 – Option selection

At this stage, we develop options for resolving the constraints identified in GRIP 2. These may include lack of funding, or encountering an endangered species in a particular area.

GRIP Stage 4 – Single option development

We present a first view of what the scheme may look like or the works that will take place. Outline designs are produced including but not limited to scheme sketch to scheme plan / technical interface documentation / operational requirement specification. The project is fully costed, the scheme is finalised and acceptance is gained. Safety is factored into the process and made a principal concern of the Fenix Signalling team.

GRIP Stage 6 – Construction, test and commission

Our installers follow the design from GRIP 5 making sure it complies to the standard:

Project Build / Signalling Installation including civils if required / Testing and Commissioning / Enter Into Service

Once complete it must all be tested by competent professionals.

GRIP Stage 7 – Scheme Handback

If required, we can provide Technical Training / Maintenance Package, Development and Delivery. The result of the project is handed over to the operator and maintenance team so that they are able to sustain the work done to its full potential.

GRIP Stage 8 – Project formal close out

The project is formally closed with the contracts settled. Any designs will be issued back to Network Rail along with the appropriate forms.
